The 28th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards were held on Monday at the Winter Garden Theatre, feting the very best of the Toronto theatre, dance and opera season.
Rick Miller, a past Dora award winner for his work in Bigger Than Jesus hosted the event for the first time. Dora Mavor Moore was a well established actress who had a long and successful career in theatre, both in Canada and abroad. This season there were no front runners – the nominations were spread evenly amongst countless productions, with the Mirvish Production of We Will Rock You leading all productions with 8 nominations. It won only one award, for Outstanding Production of a Musical. The Four Horsemen Project, a production from Ross Manson, Kate Alton and Volcano Theatre, won 4 awards for Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Direction, and Outstanding Lighting Design, all in the Independent Theatre category. Mabou Mines DollHouse won for Outstanding Touring Production. It played earlier in 2007 as part of the Harbourfront Centre’s New World Stage Festival.
