The Drowsy Chaperone and The History Boys were the big winners at the 60th Annual Tony Awards held on Sunday, June 11th, 2006.
The little show that could, The Drowsy Chaperone, which had its humble beginnings as a wedding present for Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaf, walked away with five awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Beth Leavel), Best Original Score (Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison), Best Book (Bob Martin and Don McKellar), Best Scenic Design (David Gallo) and Best Costume Design (Gregg Barnes). Jersey Boys won Best Musical, Best Actor (John Lloyd Young), Best Supporting Actor (Christian Hoff) and Best Lighting Design (Howell Binkley). John Doyle won Best Director Honours for his creative re-imagining of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. In the play categories, Alan Bennett's The History Boys won Best Play, Best Director (Nicolas Hytner), Best Actor (Richard Griffiths), Best Supporting Actress (Frances de la Tour), Best Scenic Design (Bob Crowley), and Best Lighting Design (Mark Henderson). Cynthia Nixon, known for her work on Sex And The City, won Best Actress Honours for her work in Rabbit Hole.
