Billy Joel, Now Bob DylanChoreographer Twyla Tharp Embarkes On New Musical JourneyA few years back, choreographer and director Twyla Tharp used the song catalog of Billy Joel to create Movin' Out. Now, she's back at it again.
The Times They Are A-Changin' uses the music of folk and rock legend Bob Dylan, in telling the story of a low rent circus and it's performers, led by a man named Captain Ahrab. According to press notes, "One such circus performer is Cleo, a young woman exploited by Capt. Ahrab and loved by his son, Coyote. Coyote longs for a world outside the confines of the family business, and as the circus show plays out, he must decide whether to flee or stay, and if he does stay, how to inspire change within the troupe." The Dylan songs included in the piece includes "Blowin' in the Wind," "Desolation Row," "Dignity," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Everything Is Broken," "Forever Young," "Gotta Serve Somebody," "Highway 61 Revisited," "I Believe in You," "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," "Just Like a Woman," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "Lay Lady Lay," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Maggie's Farm," "Man Gave Names to All the Animals," "Masters of War," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Not Dark Yet," "On a Night Like This," "Please, Mrs. Henry," "Rainy Day Women," "Simple Twist of Fate," "Summer Days," and "The Times They Are A-Changin'". The cast includes Michael Arden, Thom Sesma, Caren Lyn Manuel, John Selya, Lisa Gajda, Neil Haskell, Jason McDole, Charlie Neshyba-Hodges, Jonathan Nosan and Ron Todorowski. Alex Brady, Lisa Brescia, John Herrera, Alaine Kashian, Keith Kuhl, Marty Lawson, Joseph Putignano, Cary Tedder and Jason Wooten round out the company. Many of the ensemble members of the show are veterans of Tharps production of Movin' Out. The production begins previews on September 25th, opening October 26th. The show premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego in the summer of 2006. The Times They Are A-Changin' plays at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York.
