This has been a very busy year for Michael Healey. He performed in Morwyn Brebner's The Optimists to open the Tarragon season last year, stepped in to perform in his own play The Innocent Eye Test at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, finished his work on the George F. Walker show This Is Wonderland, and now, is opening the new Tarragon Theatre season with his new play, Generous.
The play is compiled of 4 (yes, 4) two-act plays. Act one of each of the plays happens before intermission, then the final 4 second-acts take place after. It centres on the exploration of a central question of what happens when members of society not known for their generosity become overwhelmed with the desire to help. It focuses on familiar sources of power, ranging from political, to judicial, to corporate.
"I'm mostly interested in the moral dilemmas created by the impulse of generosity." states Healey, when asked what inspired him to write this play.
Generous received a reading this past season at the Tarragon, directed by Daryl Cloran, who helms the full production as well. Joining Cloran will be Yannik Larivee, who will be designing the sets and costumes, Michael Walton who will design the lighting, and Lyon Smith who will take care of the sound design.
In the cast there are a few familiar faces from previous Healey plays, including Ari Cohen (Rune Arlidge), and Tom Barnett (the original production of The Drawer Boy at Theatre Passe Muraille and the Royal Alexandra Theatre), and they are joined by Yanna McIntosh, Jordan Pettle, Fiona Reid, and Michelle Monteith.
Generous opens at the Tarragon Theatre Main Space on Wednesday, September 27th, and runs until October 29th.
