Hosanna To Receive Major Re-Mount

Classic Michel Tremblay Play To Receive First Major Production In 20 Years

Sep 16, 2006 Mike Mackenzie

Pleiades Theatre presents the great Canadian classic Hosanna, written by one of Canada’s most acclaimed playwrights Michel Tremblay.

Hosanna is about identity and the struggle to find inner strength. The play focuses on a flamboyant transvestite (played by Richard Monette in the original Tarragon Theatre Production in 1974) in Montreal who learns to accept his identity while gaining self-confidence. Hosanna was originally written as a metaphor for Quebec's separatist identity crisis.

This time around, Salvatore Antonio has been cast as the title character. He received critical and audience acclaim for his portrayal of the title character in last seasons Dora Nominated production of Leo at the Tarragon Theatre, and will be performing in the show again in the new year.

Making his Toronto english language debut, is Jean-Stéphane Roy as Hosanna's biker lover Cuirette. Jean-Stéphane has had a very successful career thus far in Quebec and on the east coast of Canada.

John Van Burek, one of the original translators of the work, will helm this revival.

Teresa Przybylski is the set and costume designer and Bonnie Beecher is the lighting designer.

Hosanna begins previews on October 6th, 7th and 10th and opens officially on October 11th, playing until October 28th at the Michael Young Theatre at The Young Centre for Performing Arts in Toronto's Distillery District.
