Lord Of The Doras
The Lord Of The Rings, with its $28 million budget, was the big winner on Monday night at the 27th Annual Dora Awards in Toronto.
The Lord Of The Rings led the awards ceremony, walking away with 7 awards out of a possible 15 total nominations. It garnered statues for Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Production of a New Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical, Outstanding Costume Design, Lighting Design, Outstanding Choreography, and Outstanding Performance By A Male In A Principal Role - Musical for Michael Therriault (who played Gollum). blood.claat - one womban story, produced by Theatre Passe Muraille, won d'bi.young two awards, for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance By A Female In A Principal Role - Play. The Outstanding New Play award also won d'bi young a $5,000 prize awarded by local philanthropist Bluma Appel. In the independent theatre category, Birdland Theatre's Production of The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot, won Outstanding Production of A Play, Outstanding Direction for David Ferry, Outstanding Performance By A Male for Diego Matamoros and Outstanding Performance By A Female for Irene Poole. Ferry picked up his 2nd award of the night, winning Outstanding Lighting Design with his co-designer, Glenn Davidson. Held annually, the Dora Mavor Moore awards honours the best of the Toronto Theatre scene in the past year. This year's event was held at the Winter Garden Theatre, and was hosted by David Gale.
