An article covering the beginnings of Street theatre, how it's seen today and the organisations and events that support the art form.

Street theatre is something that has created interest and amusement for people of all ages, since Medieval times. There is a rich tradition of this art form in the U.K, where it has become highly regarded in the arts world and beyond.

How it all Started

One of the earliest forms of Street Theatre was known as a Tableau Vivant, or Moving Picture. Dating back to Medieval times it was often seen at weddings, royal celebrations, and ceremonial entrances to towns. Suitably costumed performers would sliently act out their scenes before an audience.

Street Theatre Today

Today, this is an art form that encompasses acts of all shapes, sizes and types. bizarre, weird, energetic and unique are all buzz words frequently applied to today's performers. These performers could work solo, in a group, or be part of a theatre company touring their act all over the world. The one thing they have in common is a finely tuned knack of interacting with, or getting a reaction from their audience.

Mime artists, jugglers and stilt walkers with their carnival costumes, could be among the acts seen. Mime artists often add "Living Statue" to their repertoire and love to come alive for their next victim. This is just a brief example of what audience can see. Many acts have to be seen to be believed, and cannot be explained in mere print.

Events and Organisations Supporting Street Theatre

National Associations- There are several national associations supporting Street Artists. These are the National Association of Street Artists, and the Independent Street Arts Network. Both of these have similar aims. Volunteers work tirelessly to encourage funding in their art form, networking between Street Artists and Event Promoters, and training to improve the quality of their work.

Covent Garden St Performers Association - Covent Garden is a world reknowned performance space for street art. It attracts artists from all over the world, who appear on the Piazza 364 days a year. This could involve providing anything from one day workshops, to full time arts training programs. Along with this they have built the only studio in Ireland, solely dedicated to street art.

Street Theatre Events

This is only a snapshot of what is available in the U.K, to those wanting to experience the beautiful, yet bizarre world of street entertainment.
