The summer weather has arrived in Vancouver, and despite the warm temperatures outside, things are heating up in the theatres as the summer theatre season begins.
Here is a look at just some of the plays and musicals playing in the Greater Vancouver area over the summer of 2009:
- Piaf: Love Conquers All: This one-woman musical about the life of Edith Piaf opens on July 22nd at the Firehall Arts Centre, straight from its hit Off-Broadway run.
- Othello / Comedy Of Errors / All's Well That Ends Well / Richard II: Bard on the Beach is celebrating its 20th season of Shakespearean performances in the tents at Vanier Park. First up is Othello, starring Michael Blake and Bob Frazer, and is directed by another Vancouver favorite, Dean Paul Gibson.
- Annie /Thoroughly Modern Millie: Theatre Under The Stars is back for its 29th season of presenting musicals in the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. This season, they've gone with two family-friendly shows which are sure to bring out huge audiences.
- Les Misérables / Altar Boyz: The Arts Club Theatre Company has a hit already on the Stanley stage with Les Miserables, and should have another one with the hit Off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz, which toured British Columbia earlier this year to packed houses and rave reviews.
- A New Brain: From the Tony Award-winning composer of Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee comes the story of Gordon Schwinn, a young composer teetering on the edge - does he give up his full time job writing music for a children's TV show, or does he pursue his dream of writing the musical he has always wanted to write? When he's struck with a life-threatening illness, he has the toughest choice of all - to give up or to fight and ultimately find his 'heart and music'.
- Titanic: Applause Musicals In Concert wrap up their season with Maury Yeston's Tony Award Winning musical, Titanic at the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby. The show is directed by Scott Ashton Swan, Artistic Producer of Applause Musicals In Concert, and musical direction is by Angus Kellett.
- The Supermusical!: Broadway Chorus, a company who takes existing musical theatre tunes and puts them into a new show is back with their latest, entitled The Supermusical! at the Waterfront Theatre.
- RENT: Fighting Chance Productions presents the Canadian Regional Premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical by Jonathan Larson at Presentation House in August. Starring Craig De Carlo as Roger and Anton Lipovetsky as Mark, and is directed by Ryan Mooney with musical direction by Sarah Jaysmith.
